My hair has taken a serious toll this Winter. It has been incredibly chilly and wet in Cape Town. I am not complaining though, as last year we had serious drought therefore we need all the rain that we can get. Of cause this wet weather and gusty winds has not been kind to my tresses. My hair tends to become very dry, frizzy and dull in the colder months. To combat this and add some life and vitality back into my hair, I have been doing some deep conditioning treatments. What is the different between a normal conditioner and a deep treatment, you may ask? Well, deep conditioners are concentrated with more nutrients and has a heavier consistency than a normal conditioner. These hair masks are designed to deeply penetrate the hair shaft and give maximum nourishment to your hair. Most are required to be left at least 20 to 30 minutes on your hair and some can be left over night. Do read the instructions of each mask as you don't want to overdo it and not see the intended results. Most masks should only be used once a week or once a month (depending on your hair condition) as they are concentrated and your hair does not need an overload of treatment. Deep conditioners are designed for all hair types and no matter what state your hair is in, you will greatly benefit from a mask. 

Protein vs Moisture

 There are two types of masks to choose from depending on the condition of your hair. The first is a protein mask and the second is a hydrating/moisturising mask. Protein masks are created to strengthen weak and brittle hair. As our hair is naturally made up of protein, by adding extra protein to damaged hair, it will help restore and build up the hair shaft to a healthier state. Hydrating masks adds much needed moisture to your hair making it bouncy, shiny and overall healthy. Our hair needs a balance of both protein and moisture to be at its optimal best. Though depending on your hair type, you may need a little more of one over the other. Please not that each hair type has different needs and requires different treatments. I may need more moisture but you may need more protein. It is important to assess your own hair and do what is best for you. This is sometimes by trial and error, using different products, but once you find out what your hair truly needs you can work from there and build your hair up to its beautiful natural state. I will be giving my recommendations of hair masks below with reviews. Hope you find it helpful.

Favourite Protein Hair Mask

Kerastase Resistance Masque Force Architecte
 This is one of the very first protein masks I have ever used on my hair. It is in the Core Resistance range of Kerastase which has the green packaging and holds 200 ml. This mask is wonderful to use on over processed, dyed and heat damaged hair. It goes deep into the hair shaft, treating badly damaged cells as well as strengthening the hair and preventing split ends. The light weight consistency of the mask melts into the hair. It helps with detangling and your hair is easy to manage and comb through. It has a slight floral perfumed scent which does linger on the hair after you use it. I have been using this mask for years and I always repurchase it. It is not heavy and can therefore be used on all hair types. It leaves the hair with a very smooth and shiny finish. If you have curls, it may weigh it down a little bit as it slightly straightens the hair shaft when you use it. It leaves the hair super shiny but with a sleek appearance and feel. If you want more volume and bounce then this may not be the mask for you.

L'oreal Professionel Pro Fiber Reconstruct
This mask is pure gold and should only be used on damaged hair as it is heavily concentrated. If you have normal hair with no concerns or your hair cannot handle a lot of protein then this mask should not be on your wish list. If you have a very damaged cuticle and cortex from chemical treatments, dyes and heat damage this mask will be your best friend. There are 3 masks in the Pro Fiber range and the Reconstruct variant was created to rebuild the hair shaft from root to tips. This treats breakage and very weak hair that snaps easily. The compounds reconstruct the hair thus making it stronger and more elastic. It provides lasting care and protects the hair from further damage. The formula is thick in consistency and a little goes a long way. It has a creamy texture but is quite stiff. It will not drip or slide down the tub when you tip it over. This mask can be used on all hair types, despite its thick texture. It surprisingly does not weigh hair down, nor does it make the hair super sleek. In fact, my hair has volume and lots of shine when I use this. The scent in this one is beautiful and stays on the hair for days after you use it. It comes in 200 ml of product but it will last you a life time as a little goes a long way and you really only need to use this once or twice a month. I highly recommend it for those who are really struggling with badly damaged tresses.

Favourite Moisturizing Hair Mask

Joico Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm
The word 'balm' is so appropriately used as this is no ordinary conditioner. Actually, it does not have a creamy texture at all. This is a thick emollient almost salve like product that coats the hair shaft with maximum moisture. This is like Vaseline but for your hair! The treatment balm is designed for thick and course hair that needs intense moisture to help with rough texture and add suppleness and shine to dry, lifeless hair. It contains Vitamin E and peptide complex's which nourish and coat the hair thus protecting it from drying out even further. It basically adds moisture and locks it in. It comes in a whopping 250 ml of product and will last you for more than year as you don't need to use a ton of it. Unlike the other tubs, this one is packaged in a squeeze tube which is very convenient and gives a mess free application. You can always cut the tube in half to remove all the product when you are almost done with it. I love drenching my dry ends in this as it smoothes it and prevents further damage. If you have fine to normal hair this would be too overpowering for you. Your hair will feel greasy at the roots and look quite limp. It does not promote volume but instead smooths the hair from root to tip. For thick hair that is difficult to manage, you will honestly adore this product. I only use this in the Winter months as it protects my hair from drying out and adds tons of shine.

Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask
There has been so much hype around Moroccanoil products when it first launched, I truly wanted to try it to see what the fuss was all about. I decided to purchase the deep conditioner as a starting point into the brand. The product comes in a large 250 ml tub and will last you a long time as the texture is thick, therefore a little goes a long way. The consistency is very creamy and the mask penetrates easily into the hair shaft. It does not leave the hair feeling weighed down or heavy. It feels quite light on the hair despite the thick and creamy texture. The mask contains argan oils which are very nourishing for your tresses. This is a great mask for all hair types as it is agreeable on fine and thick hair. It leaves the hair moisturised but not feeling greasy. There is volume and shine in your hair when you use it. Curly girls will love this as it does not alter the style of your curl but only moisturises your hair. It has a lovely light coconut scent which lingers slightly on the hair after washing it off. If you are looking for an all round deep conditioner that hydrates hair and leaves a healthy shine, do look into this one.

Deep Conditioners are very beneficial to your hair, no matter your hair type. It is important to give your hair the much needed TLC it deserves. You can prevent damage and wimp dull hair by using a mask at least once a month. There are many great products on the market that are created for any specific problem regarding your hair. If you are planning a glorious trip somewhere exotic you have to get over a minor mile stone to get to your paradise destination. That of cause is the impending long-haul flight! Nobody loves a long-haul flight. It is one of those uncomfortable situations that most travellers have to endure. You can make your flight a little more luxurious though by booking a 1st class seat or even better, have your own private jet. Now wouldn't that be amazing?! A girl can dream. Unfortunately, most of us common folk have to fly economy at least once in our life time. According to different airlines this may be a wonderful or a nightmarish experience. I preferably love Qatar airways as they make you feel at home and the air hostesses are very friendly and go out of their way to give you a pleasant flight. Nevertheless, sitting in one spot for 6 to 12 hours can really mess a person up physically and mentally. Did I tell you, I once fainted in a bathroom on a flight due to exhaustion and dehydration? The flight attendant had to press an emergency button to get me out. Luckily my pants were still on, when this all unfolded, LOL. Well I have some tips and tricks to avoid such horror situations and I would like to share them with you.


1)PREP YOUR SKIN: 
Firstly, before I even leave for the airport, I take some steps to prepare my skin for the long flight. Air on a plane is extremely drying for the skin as it is filtered and constantly circulating in rotation for those hours. It is important to add hydration to your body from head to toe and keep the moisture locked in. After my shower, I use a heavy-duty body butter and lather it all over myself before I get dressed. This ensures that my skin is well moisturized and won't dry out on the plane. For my face, I love to use a sheet mask for 20 minutes and let all that nourishing goodness soak in. I then seal in all that moisture with a thick cream. This will ensure my face is hydrated, radiant and less dull looking hours after my flight.

2) COMFY CLOTHES
Wearing comfortable clothes is the best thing, you could ever do for yourself on a long-haul flight. I know we have all seen celebrities wearing really stylish tight designer outfits and think: ''Wow I wish I could be like her!''. But that is just it, they are celebrities, getting on private planes and not standing in airport security lines like we are. Wearing clothes such as pants with elastic waistbands and loose-fitting tops will be your best option. Trust me, your stomach will thank you later. On a long-haul flight, your body especially your abdomen tends to swell from water retention. You are also sedentary for most of those hours and not mobile. Digestion can sometimes be slowed down or hampered due to this. Wearing clothes that stretch will relieve pressure and help you relax and feel comfortable in your seat. You don't have to look like a slob either. There are so many stylish and comfy outfits out there such as leggings, jeggings and cute floaty tops or statement t-shirts. You can still look cute and chic while being completely comfy. When it comes to statement earrings and necklaces, it is best to leave those in your suitcase. Try to wear as little jewellry as possible. This will avoid the dreaded beep going off when you pass through airport security and having to remove everything and putting it all back on again. Ain't nobody got time for that!

3) COMFORTABLE SHOES
Again, we see celebrities in glossy magazines wearing stilettos and thigh high heeled boots at airports and think: ''Wow, I want to look like her!''. Totally not practical when it comes to the common folk. It is important to wear comfortable shoes at the airport and on the plane. You never know where you gate is and you may have to walk long distances to get there. You maybe unexpectedly late for your flight and you have to run from one terminal to the other in your high heels. Absolutely torture if you ask me. My mom and sister once saw a woman at the airport wincing in pain as she struggled to walk in the airport in her high heels. For safety reasons, during emergency landings, high heels have to be removed on a flight when existing on a slide as it may puncture it. It's best to wear shoes with a comfortable sole such as trainers, sneakers or walking shoes and place your heels in your overnight bag if you really need them when you step off your flight.

4)SMELL FRESH BUT NOT OVERPOWERING
You will be sitting with a bunch of other people for a number of hours. Please be courteous and take care of your body hygiene. Wear deodorant, brush your teeth, take a shower and use foot powder in your shoes! Nobody wants to sit next to an unhygienic person for many hours to come. In the same vain, don't wear too much fragrance and knock out people sitting around you. Some people may be allergic to your overbearing musk perfume. You can wear fragrance but do not douse yourself in it. A hint of perfume is more than enough.



5) BRING YOUR OWN WATER BOTTLE
To avoid fainting on a plane like I did, it would be best to buy your own water at the airport as you cannot take outside airport beverages on the plane with you. It may be more expensive but it's a good investment. If you have problems with low blood pressure buy some healthy snacks too. Your meals are served at set times and you don't know when they will serve you meals and drinks again. It's best to have your own as to avoid constantly asking. I love to sip on water throughout my flight since my fainting incident. It keeps me hydrated and I don't feel so sluggish. Also, all that water has me wanting to use the bathroom. This gives me an excuse to get up and stretch my legs. This is extremely important on very long flights. You have to keep your blood circulating!

6)CARRY AN OVERNIGHT BAG
This could be a backpack, large hand bag or carry on case. Place an extra pair of clothes and clean underwear in there. Anything can happen, like losing your suitcase or your flight being delayed or a zombie apocalypse, LOL. You would want extra clean clothes for those moments of doom. I love travelling with my backpack as I use it as an overnight bag and adventure bag when I am out and about at my destination.

7) BITS AND BOBS
Keep some hand sanitizers or sanitizing wipes with you. You never know when you might need those in the plane toilets. Tissues and lip balm are a good idea to keep on you too for the odd sniffle and when your lips dry out from the blasting air con. Carry a phone charger in your overnight bag as you can charge your phone any time on the flight and at the airport. Neck Pillows are an absolutely life saver when you want to get some good sleep. Your body will thank you for it. Always keep your passport in a safe place such as a handbag and do not leave it in the seat compartments. You may forget it when you disembark the flight.

8) ENJOY YOURSELF AND BE KIND
Lastly, try to enjoy yourself and make the best of it. I love to watch the latest movies on the plane as this gives me the most pleasure. You are on that flight for so many hours, and therefore you might as well do things you love. Listen to your favourite music, read a book, get some much needed sleep or watch horror movies like I do, LOL. Be kind and courteous to the people sitting around you. Don't be obnoxious and rude. Remember everyone is feeling the same way that you are. We all want to get to our destination as fast as possible. Therefore put on a smile and be polite and considerate on the flight.

Do you know that rice water is the miracle liquid for long Rapunzel flowing hair? Well, I had no idea either until I came across a YouTube video showcasing this. There is a tribe deep in the heart of China called the Red Yao and their women are held in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest hair in a village. They say their secret is plain old rice water. By old I mean fermented rice water. How crazy is that? For centuries, women in Asia have been washing their hair in rice water and have achieved beautiful long, thick and strong hair. It is not just an old wives' tale. There are actual scientific proof and results that rice water is extremely beneficial in keeping your hair healthy and growing super long. I did some further research, and saw that many women around the world, have been incorporating rice water into their hair wash routines and saw results. I showed the YouTube Red Yao video to my mom and sister and they were equally amazed. We collectively decided to take on the hair challenge and start using rice water. Once you see that video, I swear you will start using it too. I cannot believe that I have been eating rice all my life and just thrown valuable nutrient water down the drain when cooking it. Not anymore! By the way, this is going to be the longest blog post of life so grab a snack!

Benefits of Rice Water

So, you may be thinking, how on earth can rice water help my hair? Let me tell you, when you soak rice or cook it in water, many valuable nutrients are extracted. When you let it ferment for a day or two a concentrated yeast called pitera and a carbohydrate inositol forms which contains valuable vitamins, minerals and amino acids. These all regenerate the cells and stimulate hair growth while strengthening the actual hair shafts of your existing tresses. They stick to the hair and form a protective layer thus keeping it from further damage. When you wash your hair in rice water, all these valuable nutrients penetrate and shield your hair. This is also true for skin, as rice water is known to act as a moisturizing and anti ageing benefit. Both your skin and hair will be radiant, glowing, healthy and strong. 

Benefits of oranges for Hair Health
To prepare your rice water and get all the benefits, you will need to let it go through a fermenting process. This is where all the magic happens and the nutrients are absorbed into the water. Unfortunately, fermented rice water smells really pungent. It's so bad that some people compare it to toilet odours and you don't want to walk around with a stench in your hair. To combat this, Red Yao women would boil the rice in tea leaves but you can add orange peels, ginger or essential oils. I prefer oranges as it has awesome nutrients for your hair too. Did you know that orange juice is an excellent conditioner for your hair? It activates hair growth too as it contains inositol, folic acid and vitamins A and B. These all aid in treating dandruff, stimulating hair growth and conditioning your hair. The juice and the white fibres of an orange peel are wonderful for cleansing the scalp. I therefore use orange peels to ferment with my rice water. It completely eliminates the smell. All I get is a fresh citrus scent on my hair. It's amazing!

How to Prepare Rice Water
 There are two methods to preparing rice water. You can either cook your rice as you would normally for a meal and keep that left over water, or you could take uncooked rice and soak it in water for a day or two. I have been using the last method. Here is the recipe:

1. You will need a 3/4 to half a cup of rice, depending on hair length, and rinse it off thoroughly in water to get rid of dust and any impurities.
2. Place your clean rice in a jar and fill it with orange peels or ginger to get rid of odours and add extra nutrients from these ingredients.
3. Fill the jar with plain old water and seal it tightly. Use a glass jar as this will help the fermenting process.
4. Keep the jar in a cool dry place, away from sunlight for one or two days


Rice Water Application
1. When using rice water, first wash your hair thoroughly with your shampoo of choice to clean the scalp and get rid of dirt and oil.
2. Strain the water from the rice and put it in a squirt bottle. You can spray the rice onto your scalp or let it slowly run on your head. Coat the hair in the water. I like to do this over the bath for a mess free application.
3. Place a towel around your neck and wrap your hair in a bun. I like to use a shower cap to keep the water from running down my face.
4. After 30 to 40 minutes, rinse your hair with normal water. Apply your favourite conditioner and proceed your hair washing routine as normal.

Results to expect
I have to stress that hair growth is dependent on genetics, hair type, diet and lifestyle. According to genetics some people's hair might grow an inch faster in a month compared to others. This does not mean that if you experience extremely slow hair growth, your hair is not growing. If you are alive, it means your hair is growing. You just have to be patient and take extra care of your hair. Another point is that no matter how many times you wash your hair with rice water, it won' help if you don't drink any water and eat a balanced diet. Hair grows from within and you need the valuable nutrients and proteins to make healthy hair. You can even incorporate vitamins into your diet if you feel you not getting enough. Lastly, your existing hair won't grow if you are not taking care of it. Be gentle with your hair. Avoid breakage by not using too much heat tools, over processing treatments, and harsh hairstyles such as tight buns or pony tails that may make the hair weak and break. Research what works best for your hair type and proceed from there. Deep conditioning treatments are very important to keep the hair moisturised and strong too. I will do a blog post on my absolute favourite deep conditioners.

The important thing to remember is that you want healthy, strong hair and not just long hair. Results may not be like the Red Yao women as we all have different hair types but your hair will be in the best condition it has ever been. I am currently doing the challenge right now and my hair does look and feel healthy. I will update on the hair growth in months to come. I hope you enjoyed this post and maybe learned something new. Differences between Foundations and Concealers

Have you ever done something out of habit or because everyone else is doing it, you do it too? That is how I feel sometimes when I apply makeup or see others applying makeup on their faces. When it comes to the beauty world, we as makeup fanatics tend to follow Youtube gurus religiously and copy everything they do. After all they are looking flawless and we want to be beautiful too. Do you ever question why we do what we do? Why do we need a concealer if we have a full coverage foundation? When do we apply concealer? How does everything work together? For someone who does not have a clue about makeup application maybe puzzled by all the 200 steps we do everyday to achieve a gorgeous face. In today's blog post I am going to break it down for you. This post is for those who are curious and new to the makeup realm. Of cause if you are a makeup connoisseur yourself, feel free to leave any tips below. Here we go!

What is a Foundation?

Foundation is a colour correcting base that is meant to even out skintone and give you an overall perfect complexion. It is applied all over the face and neck area with either hands, a brush or makeup sponge depending on the type of base. There are many different formula's of foundations like liquids, creams and powders all catered to your specific skin concern. Women who have oily skin tend to love powder foundations as it gives a matte finish. Women with very dry skin go for liquid luminous foundations for an all day hydrated glow. It is important to always buy a foundation that is suited to your specific skin type and not only the skin colour. This will give you the most natural finish and optimal skin benefits.

What is a Concealer?

Concealer is a more concentrated form of foundation. It is packaged in smaller tubes or jars and has a higher pigmentation. Concealers are meant to spot correct any areas on the face that need slightly more coverage. Areas such as dark under eye circles, eye puffiness and blemishes around the face. Since concealers are packed with higher concentration of pigments it covers imperfections easily. You only need a tiny amount on an area to blend and have excellent coverage. Concealers can be blended out with fingers as the warmth of your hands help blend it out seamlessly. You can also use a sponge or foundation brush.

Why don't we just use Foundation or Concealer only? Why do we need both? 

As mentioned above, foundations are lighter in coverage than concealers. To fully cover blemishes or under eye darkness and puffiness, it is going to take a lot of foundation layers. When applying foundation you want to look as natural as possible and not like a cake layered in icing. In order to cover certain areas, foundation will need to be layered on. Even if you are spot layering, the skin will still crease, flake and look like a mess. I have seen women layering foundation to cover blemishes and it never has a happy ending. The face always looks textured and not even toned. I do agree that there are many high coverage foundations on the market that can cover any sin you ever did. Always remember to use those sparingly and not cake the face. The same concept applies to concealers. Since concealers are heavily pigmented, applying it all over your face can end up making you look like you are wearing a full on mask. If you do not blend it out correctly it can crease heavily on the forehead area especially. Plus concealers do not come in an array of shades like foundation. It will end up being a little too light or dark for your actual skin tone. To even out your entire complexion it is best to find a foundation that matches your skin completely.

When do I apply Concealer?

There is much debate about which comes first, foundation or concealer? I personally prefer to use concealer after I apply foundation because I use it to not only cover my dark circles but to clean up any eyeshadow and eyeliner marks around my eye area. Concealer can be used to correct makeup mistakes and used as a primer before applying eyeshadow. I think it is your personal preference on using either one first. If you are going to be using a powder foundation it is important to always apply liquids and creams before hand. Applying liquids and creams on top of powder can lead to difficulty blending out and heavy creasing. Use the powder to set your concealer and make it last longer.

So where do you go from here?

Firstly, find a foundation and concealer routine that works for you. This will be by trial and error and sometimes money wasted. Trust me, once you find something that works for you, you will never regret it. There are so many different types of foundations and concealers that are excellent which will suit your budget and skin needs. Do remember, not every thing works for everybody. I personally love BB creams and liquid foundations with a little bit of concealer and a mattifying powder all over the face. On the other hand my mom does not like liquids on her face every day. she prefers to use concealer first and dust a foundation powder over her face to set everything. You want to have natural beautiful radiant skin. Do what works for you and makes you happy.

Welcome back to my blog. Yes I know it has been a while since I posted anything meaningful on here. To be honest I struggled to get back into the blogging groove. Easter happened and I was doing shows and didn't have the motivation to blog. I have since shaken off that negative energy and decided to get back into the swing of things. Also, I totally forgot that this month my blog turned 5 years old. Whoop Whoop!!! Happy Birthday to Diva Desle ;-) Any way to brighten things up on this little space of mine I thought I would do a fun post. This week I am sharing some great and crazy makeup hacks with you. Hope you like them.

1. Create your own Tinted Moisturizer: If you have natural glowy skin and want a light coverage base on lazy Saturdays, you could totally create your own BB cream. Mix a drop of your foundation and moisturiser and blend it on your face. You will enhance your natural beauty and look like you have flawless skin. Of course be careful what foundation you use. Preferably pick one that blends out easily with your hands and does not cake up or become chunky.

2. Control Oils With Powder Before Foundation: If you struggle with oily skin and your makeup tends to melt off your face here is a quick hack for you. Before applying foundation, dab a little bit of translucent powder on your t-zone. Make sure you do a light layer so that the powder is not visible. This will create an extra barrier for your oils to seep through before it hits your foundation. If you know you are going to be out in the sun all day and your trusty makeup primer is nowhere to be seen, then this is a great trick.

3. Swatch Lipsticks On Your Finger Tips: When swatching lipsticks in stores don't swatch them on the back of your hand. Swatch them on the tips of your fingers. It has a similar appearance to your lips. I know, like who knew?! This will help you in making those super tough life decisions.... Coral red or Coral pink?

4.  Use Sticky Tape To Spot Clean Your Eyeshadow Brushes: So you are in a hurry or you went on a business trip and only brought one eyeshadow brush with you, don't fret. Miraculously you got some sticky tape lying around, LOL. Take a piece and use the sticky side to clean off any eyeshadow you used before. Gentle rub the bristles on the adhesive side and watch how easy it is to clean your brush in seconds. This is great if you only have one brush to do a whole eye look.Yes the struggle can sometimes be SO REAL.

5. 3 In 1 Look With Lipstick: Did you know you can use lipstick as a cream eyeshadow and not only as a blush. Yip it is true folks! It gives a natural flush of colour on your eyelids when you blend it out with your finger. I have done this before and it seriously works. Say you at the gym or in a random parking lot looking like a walking corpse. You see a cute guy walk pass and you want to look semi decent when he sees you. Just grab that pink lipstick and plump up your lips, cheeks and eyes. Viola semi goddess in seconds ;-D Do remember obviously creamy formulas blend out better than mattes. Also a light sheer pink or nude colours look more flattering on the eyes. Make it work for you girl. *wink* ;-)

6. Make Your Own Colourful Liquid Eyeliners: This hack is for the adventurous spirit in you! Scrape off some coloured eyeshadow of your choice and mix it with eyeshadow primer and a bit of Vaseline. Blend it with a brush and draw it on with an eyeliner brush. You can also spray some MAC Fix Plus to make the product glide on easier. Great if you are at a festival or music concert and want to jazz up your makeup.You don't need to spend money buying 10 different colour eyeliners. Make your own when the occasion arises.

7. Match Your Concealer Shade With Your Inner Arms: This one blew my mind away too! The skin on your inner arm is usually a true indication of your actual skin tone as it has not been touched by the sun. If you want to conceal blemishes and scars (not highlight your face) then match your concealer shade to the tone of your skin on your inner arm. The shade that matches you the most will be perfect to conceal imperfections and still look natural and not overdone.

8. DIY Highlighter Brush: If you have fluffy brushes and struggle to control the amount of highlight you put on your face then this hack does the trick. Take a hair pin and place it towards the middle of your makeup brush hairs. It will cause the hairs to taper and create a perfect shape to apply your highlight. This is great if you are travelling and you only brought minimal makeup brushes along with you. You might be out of control when using a fluffy brush and end up looking like a glittery unicorn if you don't restrain your overly excited hand. It seriously works!

9. Craziest one yet! Make Your Own Face Setting Spray: If you have seriously sensitive skin, this last hack is just for you. Most setting sprays contain chemicals that might aggravate your skin if you are allergic to the ingredients. To prevent your skin from becoming irritated and full blown angry with you, mix a few drops of Aloe Vera gel with some purified water in a bottle. Use a 1:3 ratio and shake it up. Viola, you have a refreshing makeup spray. You can even add a few drops of rose water, lavender or witch hazel to give your spray a lovely scent and kick to revive the skin. This spray will freshen up your makeup and revitalise your face. Make sure to use purified water and not regular tap water as this spray will contain no preservatives and won't last as long as store bought spray.

My Night Time SkinCare Routine Summer 2017

Hello gorgeous Divas!

This will be my first beauty products post review for 2017. As you all know I am a serious makeup junkie. I adore cosmetics and the process of applying it every morning relaxes me. As I am getting older I have really been investing in my skincare routine. I find I am becoming a skin care addict too and the ritual of cleansing and moisturising my face everyday gives me the same euphoria that applying my makeup does. Korean Skin Care has been on my radar for a while now and I have truly been investing in their products. Compared to Western skincare, Korean products usually have the most natural and beneficial ingredients for the skin. Most brands are cruelty free, do not use parabens and have ingredients that target problems areas high on their manufacturing list. Korean skin care is also much cheaper than a lot of Western brands. Now don't get me wrong, there are a lot of high end Korean products that can really make your wallet cry. There are also great Western products that have amazing ingredients and are kind to your wallet. It all depends on the individual product and brand. By trial and error I feel I am leaning to Korean skin care more often now. I have seen amazing results on my skin. I have not given up Western products completely though. I love combining the two for optimal results. Below is my current Summer routine as I may change some products in Winter.

1. The Body Shop Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter: This product is amazing. I am not even joking. When I first used it I didn't expect to fall in love with it like I did. I have a full review on it here. This butter is super gentle on the skin and gets rid of all makeup including waterproof mascara. It cleanses the face well too. I double cleanse my face because I wear makeup everyday. I use this butter as the first step to removing all my makeup thoroughly. I rub a small amount all over my face and wash it off with water.

2. Clarins Daily Energizer Cleansing Gel: Once I removed all my makeup I like to double cleanse and use my favourite face wash of life which is this gorgeous gel cleanser. It contains Moringa extracts which is well known to rejuvenate skin and remove impurities. The cleanser smells amazing and is very gentle on the skin. It has a gel consistency at first and turns into a foam as you wash your face. I use it to thoroughly remove dirt and grime from my pores. It leaves my face squeaky clean but not dry or sensitive. 3. Etude House Wonder Pore Freshner Toner: This is a kind of a cult beauty product in the Korean  market. Everyone including their grandma uses this toner. I too have written a review on it which you can read here. This is marketed as a 10 in 1 toner which cleanses pores, removes dead skin, refines skin tone and balances ph level of the skin while controlling sebum. I personally love this toner because it thoroughly removes makeup and dirt without making my skin dry. It is very gentle to use even though it does contain a small amount of alcohol. This 250ml bottle is a holy grail product for me. I have gone through more than four of these bottles in the past few years. I will definitely keep repurchasing it.

4. Goodal Moisture Barrier Fresh Liquid: This is a fairly new brand on the Korean skin care market. I discovered the brand while searching for affordable essences. Even though I have combination skin I felt like my skin was feeling a little dry lately. I decided to invest in a moisturising essence that would penetrate deep into my skin and provide extra hydration. Korean essences are different to western serums in that it is slightly lighter and applied after toner and before a serum. It has a viscous texture which is packed with nutrients that benefit the skin. I chose the Goodal Moisture Barrier Liquid not only for the price but for the awesome ingredient list. The 150ml bottle contains a good amount of Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) which is proven to prevent hyper pigmentation, brighten skin tone and prevent ageing. I splash a few drops on my hand and pat it into my face. It truly moisturises and brightens my skin. I use it twice a day before I apply my day or night cream. The scent is quite floral and strong. If that is not your thing then you may want to skip this one and find another essence.
 

5. Nature Republic Argan 20 Real Cream: Nature Republic is a very famous and well established cosmetic brand in Korea. They have an array of skin care products catered to different needs. My western creams were starting to become too expensive on my wallet. I decided to try a cheaper cream that is packed with the same wonderful ingredients of a high end brand. As you know, just because a product is expensive does not mean it has good ingredients that are beneficial to the skin. Sometimes you pay more for the brand name and packaging than the actual product itself. When buying skin care always look at your ingredient list and not just the packaging and brand name alone. The cream that I use is formulated with fermented argan oil. Argan oil is known as liquid gold for your hair and skin. It contains high amounts of Vitamin E which provides nutrition and moisture for the skin. Argan oil is known for it's anti ageing properties too. While this cream is not number one in the anti ageing department, I feel for my skin right now it provides enough nutrients and hydration. As I get older I will definitely buy another cream with more anti ageing punch. This cream comes in a 50ml tub and smells sweet and fresh. It's quite thick in consistency and a little goes a long way. I love to use this at night and wake up to plump skin in the morning.

Hi Divas!

Since I started my blog back in 2012 I have learned so much about beauty. I feel that I have come a long way regarding cosmetics. I have learned by trial and error what works for me and what does not. Just because a makeup trend looks amazing on a model in Cosmopolitan magazine, does not mean it would look great on me. Beauty products are not only meant to enhance your natural beauty, but they are also a fun way to express your personality and your creativity. Looking back at some old photos I have made a lot of mistakes along the way. Let me share some with you.
P.s. Don't judge me! Hahaha




 1. Wearing Toasty Foundations: Back in high school I was not too concerned about foundations and BB creams did not hit the western market yet. There were no Youtube tutorials to show me what to do or give advice on choosing the right base for my face. If I saw a foundation shade that looked brown enough for me to wear to an event, I would buy it. Whether it was too toasty brown for my skin tone, too oily or too dry I didn't care because I had no clue. I just wanted to slap some stuff on my face because that's what you were suppose to do when you wear makeup. Of cause today teenage girls everywhere have tutorials and how to magazine spreads for days on choosing the right foundation for your skin tone and skin type in 2016. We have come a long way, people ;-)

2.  Matching My Eyeshadow, To My Lipstick, To My Top: So the logical explanation to this makeup monstrosity is the age old rule that everything must match. I blame my mom for matching everything when I was three from my dress to my bag to my shoes! Only joking, love you mom! ;-). Back in the day if I was wearing a mauve pink top, I obviously had to wear mauve pink eyeshadow and a mauve pink lipstick to match and make everything flow into one big pink horror story. I thought I was cool and looked amazing but in reality I looked like a hot mess. Never again! LOL.

3. Wearing A Thick White Pencil Line Across My Top Eyelids: Why was this trend a thing back in the early 2000's? I remember my aunt coming to visit us at our house for the holidays and she was wearing a crisp white pencil line across the top of her eyes where you would place your black winged liner. She recommended the white pencil to me and I of cause went out and got a white and silver pencil too. I would wear this look to church sometimes. God was probably smiling down on me saying '' No Desle, No!''

4. Not Cleaning Up My Eyebrows: For a long time I never gave a second thought to my eyebrows. I always had thick eyebrows so I never thought about filling them in or touching them up. My mom plucked my eyebrows for the first time when I was 17 for my high school matric dance. I nearly cried my eyes out from pain and vowed to never do that again. Well, I'm still sticking to that promise. Any way, I look back at photos now and I could have at least brushed my eyebrows and made them a little neater when I would go out. Thank goodness, that I discovered eyebrow gel, because those suckers keep your brows neat and tidy all day.
 
5. Not blending my eyeshadows: By now everyone knows that the secret to great eyeshadow looks are all in the blending. Blend till you can't blend no more. Since I didn't invest in makeup brushes back in the day I would use my fingers and those retro eyeshadow sponge applicators to apply all my eyeshadows. The result were harsh eyeshadow lines and angles that would not look flattering on any body. Hell No!

6. Not Wearing Concealer: Why didn't I know that concealer is the magic wand in your makeup bag? I swear my under eye bags and dark circles were crying out for cover.

7. Not Using A Night Cream: Night creams are important! At night your skin rejuvenates itself. You are not in the sun, so your skin can absorb all the nutrients from your nightly skincare routine. You will wake up with a more moisturised and youthful face if you use a good night cream. This would have helped me a lot back at university when I was out late at night partying. Uhmm... for the record mom I was in the library all night studying. Hehe ;-)

8. Licking My Lips: I used to lick my lips a lot when I was younger. It would cause rings around my mouth. It would look really sore and red. I'm talking to you LL Cool J, licking lips is bad for you! Invest in a good moisturising lip balm. You can use a sugar scrub or toothbrush to exfoliate your lips too and get rid of crusty skin.

9. Leave The Hair Gel Alone: Do you guys remember when hair gels and using normal conditioners as leave in conditioners were a thing? Well all that created was product build up and dandruff galore. A big fat NO! I learned to thoroughly wash and rinse out product build up not only on my hair, but brushes too. You scalp will thank you for it.

10. Lastly Don't Forget To Love Yourself: Beauty products are meant to enhance your natural beauty. Not change who you are and make you super insecure about yourself. It's important to take pride in the way you look and look after yourself but not to the extent of trying to erase who you really are. Accept your little imperfections and don't beat yourself down about them. Those things make us unique.

Throw Your Nasty Crusty Makeup Away!

I know we all have that one makeup product that no matter what animal species are growing on it, we just refuse to throw it away. Don't act like you don't know what I am talking about. It might be your first foundation colour match you ever bought, or that lipstick that was discontinued two years ago. We all have a cosmetic product that for nostalgic or emotional attachments we just won't let go of. I know it can be hard sometimes because it is in our comfort zone or that product was so damn expensive you don't even want to think of your money going down the drain. As most things in life, including yourself, makeup has an expiry date. It's gonna kick the bucket some day. Most beauty products actually don't have expiry dates printed on them. Therefore it is easy to forget and keep using old makeup. You should take note of when you bought your cosmetics and if the formulas have changed for the worst over time. We all have to be aware that whatever me put on our skin gets absorbed by our bodies. For some our skin is resistant to many things. For others it is a different story and can lead to serious skin infections, breakouts and allergies later in life. Below is a guideline as to when to throw that nasty makeup away!

1.Liquid Foundations and Cream Products: *6-12 Months Lifespan!*. Most foundations come in liquid formulas. The components in liquid products break down and separate faster than dry ingredients. As with cream products such as concealers these can become hard or flakey. Check your makeup to see if your foundation consistency has changed and become lumpy. Sometimes oil would separate from the foundation and sit as a another layer on top. When this happens throw it away.

2. Powder Foundations, Blushes, Bronzers and Loose Setting Powders: *2 Years Lifespan!*. Unlike liquids, powder products last longer as the ingredients are dry and bacteria takes a lot longer to grow on them and break it down. Sometimes powder products can form a layer of crust on them due to oils that we transfer from our skin onto our makeup products. You can scrape the crusty top layer off and the product will be fine underneath. If your powders have been in your makeup draw for more than 2 years, throw it away. Bacteria is still swimming around on it and you do not want to transfer those buggers on your face. Eeww!

3.Eyeshadows: *2 Years Lifespan!*. As with powder products most eyeshadows are dry pigments so bacteria won't break it down quickly. Here again, a top layer of crust may form on your eyeshadow due to oils transferring from your fingers onto the product. You can scrape the top layer off and your eyeshadow will be good as new. If you see that the whole eyeshadow has turned hard and crusty, not just the top layer, then throw it away. That eye infection ain't worth your time!

4. Mascaras: *3 to 6 Months Lifespan*. This is a hard one. I know I struggle to throw my mascara away after 6 months if I feel that I can still get some use out of it. Unfortunately bacteria breeds very quickly in mascaras. We are constantly pumping air into the tubes making it a bacteria's play ground. Mascara formulas therefore break down fairly quickly. To prevent your mascara from expiring in a jiffy, try to not pump your mascara. Rather twist it inside the tube if you need more product. You can tell when mascara has reached its end. When the formula gets hard and very clumpy then it's time to toss that bad boy.

5. Lipsticks: *12 to 18 Months Lifespan!*. Oh gosh, I fail again! I have lipsticks from 2010. Let me just go hide my head in shame. Lipsticks are creams and the formulas tend to change over time. They can become either flakey, separated or start having a watery texture. Sometimes lipsticks change according to the weather as well. It all depends on whether it was stored in a hot humid environment. Lipsticks are also a big breeding ground for bacteria. Excuse me while I purge my old nasty lipsticks.

 6: Eyeliners in Pencil, Creams or Gel Formulas: *6 Months to 2 Years Lifespan!*.  Pencil eyeliners can last for 2 years has they can be sharpened to remove bacteria and make it good as new. Gel liners and cream liners last for about 6 months. They become dry, hard and cracked. If you see your pencil liners and gel liners become crumbly and hard. Throw it away. It's time to move on.

1. Use a body loofah to clean your makeup brushes: I found this one out one day at a hotel I was staying at in Qatar. They gave me so many free body loofahs that I did not know what to do with them. I got a brain spark one day and decided to clean my makeup brushes. Who needs to buy expensive brand name makeup brush cleaners? Any body loofah with some ridges will do. You can use them many times before throwing them away and buying a new one. I personally found this to be the best method in thoroughly cleaning my makeup brushes without breaking the bank! ;-)

2. Use a nail art brush to draw a winged liner and clean nail polish around cuticles: Another brain spark I got in my room one day. I have many nail art brushes in all sizes. One day I was struggling to draw the perfect winged liner with my Maybelline gel. The smallest brush I had was a nail art brush, I decided to give it a try and it worked surprisingly better than any makeup brush. On another occasion I ran out of ear buds to clean off my nail polish on my cuticles. I grabbed a small nail art brush and dipped it into my nail polish remover. It worked amazingly well and I never looked back!

 3. Use a frozen spoon to soothe swollen puffy eyes and decrease under eye bags:  Please tell me I am not the only one who wakes up in the morning looking like a puffy mess! Sometimes I feel like, I look like a blow fish in the mirror (insert ugly cry here) Lol. There is a temporary and cost effective solution to my problem. Pop a spoon a night before into the fridge. The next morning, place the back part of the spoon on your under eye bags or place the front part of the spoon over your eyes. The swollen blood vessels will decrease and your puffy mess will too. Whoop!!!

 

4. Press for time? Use a bronzer on your eyelids and cheeks for a contoured and glowy look: If you need one makeup product in your life when you are stuck on a desert island, that would be bronzer! This nifty compact can be used as an eyeshadow to warm up your eyes on the lids or crease. Use it as a blush or contour to warm up your face and sculpt it. Place it on the sides of your nose for a more chiseled look. Preferably use one with a little bit of shimmer in it to give a lovely glow as an eyeshadow, blush and highlight combo on the face. I love my Sephora bronzer in Seychelles Cruise. It comes with three tones. A dark and light bronzer with petals of pink blush and shimmers in between. It really is so versatile and pretty. Will do a review on it soon.

5. Hair smelling a bit funky? Spray some perfume on your tresses and brush it through: During the midweek slump, you may have no time to wash your hair and have run out of dry shampoo. No problem! Simply spray some of your favourite perfume onto your hair or brush and comb it through. The scent will linger in your hair all day long and lift your mood.

6. Use Vaseline as a base around your nails when painting them to help for a cleaner and easier manicure and rub this miracle product on your eyelashes: Vaseline is one of those holy grail products. I swear you can use it for practically anything. Another reason to buy a tub of Vaseline is for a easy and painless manicure application. Rub it along your cuticles to prevent nail polish spills on the sides of your fingers. You can rub your trusty Vaseline on your clumpy eyelashes to loosen up stubborn waterproof mascara and it can be washed or wiped off easily. You are moisturising your pretty lashes while you do this too. Yay!
 
7. Place dry mascara and eyeliners in a cup of hot water to revive it!: I hate wasting. I will use everything to the last drop unless it is really hazardous to my health. Only then I will throw it away. For all your dried clumped up mascaras and eyeliners, you can give them new life by placing it in a cup of hot water for an  hour or so. Those products will work good as new. Well for the moment. If it cannot be saved rather throw it out. Nobody loves an eye infection ;-D

8. Use your GHD/flat iron to iron your clothes if you are press for time or do not see a actual iron in sight: Ladies, I have done this many times and I am not ashamed to say it. When you travel a lot like I do sometimes a iron meant for clothes is no where insight. Especially when I have been travelling on those long road trips to rural areas for work. I never leave my GHD at home because a girl's hair always need to be on fleek! After I styled my hair to the max I then proceed to iron out my clothes. You know those shirts and tops need ironing because it was rolled up in a little travel bag and thrown in the back of a 4x4 jeep because your guy coworkers couldn't care less how things are packed. Ladies, the straightening iron is your friend!

9. Decant your facial toner into a spray bottle for a no mess and no waste application: I prefer to spray my toners onto my face and wipe it off with a cotton pad. When you pour it on a cotton pad and then wipe your face you really do waste a lot of product. By decanting it in a spray bottle you can use every last drop because you know skin care these days are super expensive. If your toner does not contain alcohol you can use it as a refreshing spray throughout the day too.Whatever rocks your boat!

Ladies, my hair is an absolute mess right now. I really need to get to the hairdresser and have my hair trimmed and treated with a deep moisturising and protein treatment. I hardly ever go to the hairdresser so I feel it is time to give my hair some TLC. I like to get my hair treated and styled before December so that it looks beautiful for Christmas and the Summer holidays here in the southern hemisphere. My hair is naturally curly and tends to frizz sometimes. I have copious amounts of hair products in the cupboard to deal with my unruly hair. So before I hit the hairdresser I want to share my holy grail hair products with you. These keep my hair looking decent and tame throughout the year, come rain or shine or gale force winds.




 John Frieda Frizz Ease Straight Ahead Shampoo

Hannon Moisture Miracle Hair Treatment
This is an intense moisture treatment for very dry hair. I love to lather my ends in this product, as it is dry and needs deep conditioning. If you have very fine thin hair then this would probably be too heavy for you as it could weigh the hair down and cause oily roots. I have thick hair and it needs serious taming, so I rely on this product to perform miracles on my wild hair. I love this treatment it makes my hair super soft and feeling moisturised. BC Bonacure Hairtherapy Oil Miracle Gold Shimmer Treatment
The consistency of this mask is much lighter than the Hannon treatment and it contains argon oil. When I want silky smooth tresses without the heavy deep conditioning feeling, I use this one. It still moisturises my hair but is very light in texture so it does not weigh the hair down. This can be used on ladies with thin fine hair. (Sold in salons only)

Loreal Professionnel Liss Unlimited Leave In Conditioner
 When I want to rock it natural I slap this conditioner on my hair. It makes my curls soft and removes frizziness. This too is light in consistency and doesn't leave unwanted product residue on the hair. Sometimes leave in conditioners can cause hair to look dull and sit very heavy on the roots. This one conditions the hair and keeps it looking vibrant and shiny. (Sold in salons only)

Organic Olive Oil Heat Protection Serum
When you are using any heat on your hair it is very important to use a heat protecting product before you start styling. I use a pea sized amount of this serum on my hair and place a little more on the ends. This serum is amazing and the bottle lasts a really long time. Olive oil is known throughout the centuries for it's moisturising and smoothing properties on the hair.  (Sold at Clicks)

BC Bonacure Hairtherapy Oil Miracle Light Finishing Treatment
You can apply this product before or after blow drying. It consists of argon oil that leaves the hair frizz free and shiny without weighing the hair down. It makes my ends so soft and smooth. I really recommend this oil if you struggle with frizz. (Sold in salons only)

Why not throw in a selie?

So you get those days when your hair is just looking absolutely disastrous and there ain't no time for anything. I rock a patterned head band and slap on some big earrings and bold lipstick. Voila! Bohemian Gypsy Chic look in seconds. Nobody is going to know ;-)

I thought I would start an international Series on my blog since I have many overseas brands in my beauty stash that are either not available or hard to find in SA. I want to do reviews on these products to help you make informed decisions when you buy these products online or you go overseas and have a crazy beauty shopping spree, like I did ;-) It is always good to know what is out there and know what to look out for when you travel. 

First up, we will be travelling to the U.K for the awesome Soap & Glory brand.

About Soap & Glory: 

Soap & Glory was founded by Marcia Kilgore in England. This brand not only comprises of bath and body products but has an extensive makeup range too. Their products are packaged in baby pink colours with slogans that will either make you laugh or blush. This brand is very playful and sometimes cheeky as well when it comes to product names. They draw inspiration from vintage pin up women mixed with 21st century humour.

Products I used:

- The Righteous Butter: What can I say about this butter? It is everything I ever wanted in a body butter plus more. Firstly it comes in a big pink 300ml tub. You ladies know I love all things pink so this is a serious bonus for me. Secondly the scent of this body butter is so amazing I could just sniff it all day long. It consists of mandarin, rose, jasmine, peach and warm vanilla notes. Thirdly this body butter is super moisturising. I would lather my skin with it in the evening and the next evening my skin would still feel soft and moisturised. This is perfect for dry winter skin as it contains shea butter and aloe vera. The butter formula has a moisture trap matrix to keep the skin hydrated for longer. I usually use this twice a week because it is so moisturising on the skin. I can understand why this is an award winning body butter. It is amazing and I want more.


-Clean On Me Shower Gel: Ladies!!! Hide this shower gel away from your husband, sisters, kids and everybody in your house hold. I swear to you this is the best shower gel I have ever used in my whole life. Take it from me, you wouldn't want to share one little drop with anyone. The 480ml tube of shower gel has a built in body lotion and mandarin peel extracts. The body wash is thick and creamy and lathers wonderfully on the skin. I can't get enough of the beautiful sweet fresh scent. I sometimes open the bottle just to take a whiff of it. Once you use this bath time will never be the same. My skin always felt clean, luxurious and moisturised. I need to buy 10 bottles!

-Flake Away Body Scrub: I have the travel size tub of this scrub. It is a thick sticky paste with shea butter, sweet almond oil, peach seed powder, sea salt and sugar. I rub the paste all over my body with my hands until the sugar dissolves. This sea salt and sugar exfoliates the skin while the shea butter and sweet almond oil leaves your skin feeling soft and glowing. This is a lovely scrub that is gentle enough to use every day. The scent is made up of Soap and Glory's famous original pink scent which is sweet with a little orange citrus twist. I would definitely buy a bigger tub of this scrub.

-Hand Food Hand Cream: The hand cream consists of Shea butter and Macadamia oil to moisturise and nourish dry hands. I must say that I was a little disapointed with this hand cream. I was expecting the hand cream to do wonders for my hands. Unfortunately it has a very light consistency and does not work well for dry winter skin. This would be best for summer time when your hands need a little moisture. This is my least favourite scent from the range. The smell is a little artificial and not soothing or calming. I probably would not purchase this again as I love hand creams that can be used all year round.

My favourites and absolute must haves:

It has to be the Clean On Me Shower Gel and the Righteous Body Butter. I truly feel like I don't want to live without these two products. They are the best in the range.

Things I still want to try: 

I would still love to try their makeup products and their Sugar Crush body range.
